· A pan flute, also known as panpipes or syrinx, is a musical instrument based on the principle of the closed tube. It consists of multiple pipes of gradually increasing length (and occasionally girth). Various types of pan flutes have been popular as folk instruments.
· The name pan flute comes from Greek Mythology. According to Greek legend, the nymph Syrinx was turned into reeds to protect her chastity from the god Pan. When pan blew over the reeds in frustration, the pan flute was created. In Ancient Greece, the pan flute was considered a shepherd's instrument, and Pan was the god of shepherds.
